Nitrogen‐Loads to Streams: Importance of Bypass Flow and Nitrate Removal Processes
نویسندگان
چکیده
N-loads from subsurface, drains, and groundwater-fed surface (bypass) flows via two riparian zones (crop field wetland) to a second order stream were investigated by sampling of shallow deep groundwater on both sides monthly measurements bypass springs, including water quality (nitrate). A push-pull test in the crop gave first-order denitrification rate (0.23 day–1). Reactive transport modeling evaluated observations chemistry processes below showing that nitrate was completely removed with pyrite aquifer (model rates 0.6–2.5 mmol NO3 L−1 yr−1). drain routed ∼10% regional inflow stream. Buffer efficiency high at 90%. The wetland other side hosts several locations nitrate-rich flow predominantly through non-maintained drainage system drainpipes ditches accounting for 59% input. Nitrate dissolved organic matter groundwater. N load is amongst highest recorded data shows very high. buffer ranged 45% 83% depending if all contributed or only visible outflow. conceptual model removal as function Damköhler number percent proposed.

Stimulating nitrate removal processes of restored wetlands.
The environmental and health effects caused by nitrate contamination of aquatic systems are a serious problem throughout the world. A strategy proposed to address nitrate pollution is the restoration of wetlands. However, although natural wetlands often remove nitrate via high rates of denitrification, wetlands restored for water quality functions often fall below expectations. This may be in p...
متن کاملVulnerability of streams to legacy nitrate sources.
The influence of hydrogeologic setting on the susceptibility of streams to legacy nitrate was examined at seven study sites having a wide range of base flow index (BFI) values. BFI is the ratio of base flow to total streamflow volume. The portion of annual stream nitrate loads from base flow was strongly correlated with BFI. Furthermore, dissolved oxygen concentrations in streambed pore water w...
متن کاملBiological nitrate removal processes from drinking water supply-a review
This paper reviews both heterotrophic and autotrophic processes for the removal of nitrate from water supplies. The most commonly used carbon sources in heterotrophic denitrification are methanol, ethanol and acetic acid. Process performance for each feed stock is compared with particular reference nitrate and nitrite residual and to toxicity potential. Autotrophic nitrate removal has the advan...
متن کاملNitrate Removal in a Continuous-Flow Stirred Reactor
The presence of excess nitrate in natural water resources is determined worldwide and therefore the methods for reduction and prevention of water pollution are still being investigated. The main objective of the present study was the use of natural zeolite that was interacted with bacterial cells to obtain biozeolite particles (Bio-ZPs). The resulting Bio-ZPs were applied for nitrate removal fr...
متن کاملNitrate retention and removal in Mediterranean streams bordered by contrasting land uses: a 15N tracer study
We used 15N-labelled nitrate (NO−3 ) additions to investigate pathways of nitrogen (N) cycling at the wholereach scale in three stream reaches with adjacent forested, urban and agricultural land areas. Our aim was to explore among-stream differences in: (i) the magnitude and relative importance of NO−3 retention (i.e. assimilatory uptake) and removal (i.e. denitrification), (ii) the relative co...
